Why do you need iron?

Iron is very important for red blood cells to form, without iron the blood cells can be destroyed easily and fast. the function of red blood cells is to carry oxygen to the body and carbon dioxide out from the body. during pregnancy, the body forms red blood cell for the mother and the baby at the same time, so if iron is low in her body the red blood cells will not be enough for the mother and the baby causing them to have complications during pregnancy and after birth.

Testing for anemia

to know that the mother is having iron deficiency only by doing a blood test called a CBC (complete blood count). this can be repeatedly done for the mother from the first visit and during each visit if the mother is having anemia to make sure the mother and the baby are in good condition. during this period the doctor will prescribe iron supplements to prevent any complications during this period to make it safe and without complications.

Treating anemia

during pregnancy, the doctor will prescribe iron supplements for the pregnant woman with some advice to change her lifestyle that made this period to be healthier and safe. this by the following:

Eating foods high in iron

the food that contains high iron are:

·         The meat especially red meat and organs like liver.

·         fish and seafood that is high in omega 3

·         the milk, and eggs that are important for protein products

·         The vegetables especially green leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Taking iron supplements

Prenatal vitamins can often supply adequate iron. However, if you require more, your doctor can advise taking an iron supplement. With a glass of orange or cranberry juice, swallow iron tablets. These fruit juices' vitamin C content helps facilitate your body's iron absorption. However, avoid taking your iron supplements with liquids that include calcium in them. They may prevent the iron from being absorbed by your body.

Some negative effects of iron supplements are possible. They could make you feel nauseous or constipated, and they might turn your feces black. The following advice might help you reduce negative effects:

·        1. Begin gently. For a few days, take 1 tablet every day. Then gradually increase your dosage to the specified level.
