Did parents agree or disagree to give their child COVID – 19 vaccination?
Introduction:
Coronavirus is having a negative impact on all populations and
causing them to be afraid for their life. Many pharmaceutical companies urgently tried to develop a
vaccine to protect people from this disease. After that, they successfully got vaccines, and all countries have been
using them to protect their populations from infection. So, there was a
research study done about parental acceptability, concern, intention, and
perception toward COVID – 19 vaccination that was done by me to identify and
assess to assess the parental acceptability, concern, intention, and perception
toward COVID – 19 vaccination. Because the parents were decision-makers for
their children, their opinion is important to know if they will allow their
children to take the COVID-19 vaccine or not.
The process that has been done for conducting a research study:
This research study started after getting approval from all the
research and ethical committees that the
tools were divided into parts: demographic information of the parents,
demographic data of their children, parental acceptability, concern, intention,
positive perception, and finally negative perception toward COVID-19
vaccination. This research study was conducted for all parents living in Ras Al
Khaimah. The questionnaire was sent to all parents who visited vaccination
centers by using Google online form sent by WhatsApp application. The participants were 366
parents from the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
The parents’ opinion toward COVID-19 vaccination:
The result
of this study showed that parent were showed most of the parents were young aged from 20 to 29 ( 34.2%), female (
80.3%), married with children (94%), university graduates ( 55.7%), and
unemployed ( 40.2%).The analyses of personal information of the child, and
showed most of the children were aged from 3 to 5 (30.9%), male (33.6%), not
applicable answered in suffering from a chronic condition (74.3%), vaccinated
from COVID-19 (75.4%), and receive all necessary vaccines (85.8%). Also related
to the analysis related to COVID-19 that most of the family
members not suffering from health risk conditions (51.1%), vaccinated against
COVID-19 virus (89.6%), diagnosed with
COVID 19 positive (69.9%), isolated because of being
in contact with COVID positive person, or obtaining a positive PCR test (73%),
and wearing a face mask is the procedure they think that may prevent COVID-19
infection (12.6%). The statistical category of acceptance, concern, intention,
and negative perception showed medium, however, the positive perception showed
high, and the association and correlation showed highly significant (p=0.000).
So
according to the result, the parents still hesitate to give their child the
COVID-19 vaccine, the support research study was done by Drouin et al., (n.d.)
conducted in August 2020, and the primary outcome was parents’ answers to the
question of their acceptance and intention to get their child vaccinated if a
vaccine against COVID-19. Parents were also asked about their intention to get
vaccinated for themselves and their children. A total of 305 participants
completed the survey which showed 19.1% of participants reported being unlikely
or very unlikely to vaccinate their child against COVID-19 if a vaccine was
available, and 21.0% were unlikely or very unlikely to get vaccinated
themselves. The factors associated with parents' decision to have their child
vaccinated were the parental level of education, employment status, sex of the
child, presence of other chronic diseases, and consultation with a health
professional. But, most of the research studies that I read it was supporting
that their children must have COVID-19 vaccination, which will improve their
immunity to fight against the disease.
Conclusion:
This
disease affects all people, especially vulnerable groups, and parents. And the
government tried, and support taking vaccination to get immunity against this
disease. There were some parents who hesitated and were afraid to give their
children the vaccine, but later when the people understand the importance of
the vaccine, and it was not harming the individual the parents will support
them, and without fear, they will change their minds toward the vaccination.
