Impact of COVID - 19 pandemic on nursing students'
Abstract
Background:
Nursing students are the future healthcare professionals, and the quality of their education and training can influence their knowledge, attitudes, and practice. Student nurses' challenges during the COVID-19 epidemic had a negative impact on their attitude and practice throughout clinical training, which could affect patient care.
Aim/Objective:
To assess the impact of the COVID - 19 pandemic on
nursing students’ attitudes and practice during clinical training.
Design:
The study was a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted in the Northern Emirates of the United Arab Emirates.
Participants:
The students were all Bachelor of Science in Nursing students attending hospitals for clinical training from chosen Nursing Colleges in the Northern Emirates of the United Arab Emirates. The sample size was a consecutive sample, with 198 pupils participating out of a total population of 345 students.
Methods:
There are two elements to the data collecting from nursing students and the tool. The first section contained demographic information about nursing students discussing their demographic information and their status during the COVID-19 pandemic when they were going to the clinical for training, and the second section contained two questionnaires about nursing students' attitudes and practices regarding patient care during the COVID-19 epidemic and the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on there practice and attitude during clinical training.
Results:
The study finding indicated that the majority
of nursing students were age group between 21 to 25 years old (58.3%), females
(93.4%), 4th year of nursing study (35.4%), working in the medical ward (25.8%), and
living with their parents (75.8%). Whereas about 74.9% of the students were not
suffering from any health risk condition, their families were suffering
from health risk conditions, especially hypertension (40.2%). The majority of
the students were tested between 11 to 19 times (47%), with negative test results
(94%), not isolated (58.6%) with family negative test results (55.1%). The
total score category of nursing students' attitudes and practice toward patient
care were showed that nursing students were having average attitudes (73.7%)
and average practice (70.2%) toward patient care.
Conclusions: The findings of the study revealed that nursing students' attitudes and practices toward patient care during the COVID – 19 pandemics were average during clinical training, and suggested implementing a training program to foster nursing students' crisis management skills.

In conclusion, the study showed that the students were having average attitudes and practice toward patient care during clinical training. These results can affect negatively patient care so the educational sectors must provide a guideline and protocols for helping students during clinical training, especially during pandemic crises. read more
