New disease (monkeypox) disease
introduction:
The disease started (2022):
This disease
has newly appeared and started in nine European countries, the U.S., Canada,
and Australia. The first case was reported in the U.K. on 7 May, when the
patient was traveling to Nigeria and 20 confirmed cases were reported by BBC
NEWS (2022). In Australia, the first confirmed case was detected when felt ill
after traveling from the U.K. (BBC NEWS,2022).
Monkeypox:
Monkeypox is
an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. This disease can cause
signs and symptoms like headache, fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle pain, and
feeling tired. Moreover, the person can suffer from rashes that form blisters
all over the body. The symptom’s onset can be from 7 to 14 days and the
duration between 2 to 4 weeks. This disease can affect humans and animals.
The history
of monkeypox discovery of this disease to humans was in 1970 and 50 cases were
reported between 1970 to 1979 in Zaire, followed by 400 cases reported and the outbreak
of the disease in 1986 in central and west Africa. (Wikipedia, 2020) . Also,
the outbreak reached the United States in 2003.
Mode of transmission:
The
infection can be transmitted from infected animals or humans to other healthy human-caused
him to become ill and have the disease. The transmission can be by blood,
bodily fluid, respiratory secretions, skin lesions, and mucosal lesions. Even
sharing the tools and utensils of the affected person can transmit the disease.
(World Health Organization: WHO, 2018)
Vaccination:
The research
showed that vaccination against smallpox is effectively working for monkeypox
in 85% as World Health Organization: WHO, (2018) discussed, but still newer
vaccine based on a modified virus (Ankara strain) was approved to prevent the
disease as described by World Health Organization: WHO, (2018).
Treatment:
In Europe and the United States, tecovirimat or the smallpox medication brincidofovir were suggested as first-line antiviral treatments, combined with supportive care (including antipyretic, fluid balance, and oxygenation). If subsequent bacterial or varicella-zoster infection is suspected, empirical antibiotic treatment or aciclovir may be utilized. (Wikipedia, 2020).
